The Dark Heart of New Jersey

“The Dark Heart of New Jersey” is another story inspired by the great eerie poet Stanley McNail. It follows a series of uncanny sensations experienced by the singer in his 19th-century upstairs apartment. As I was writing, I realized I had never paid proper tribute to the state I grew up in — so I decided to do it here, perhaps in a questionable way. The only New Jersey songs that came to mind offhand were the old joke song that says, “What did Della wear? She wore her new jersey,” and “New Jersey, New Jersey, Where the Big Tomatoes Grow,” which one of my wild, crazy, wonderful uncles used to sing.
