Although at first glance it appears to be a single star, it is actually a binary system. The two stars orbit around a common center of mass with a period of 79.91 years. Due to an eccentric orbit, their mutual distance varies from 11.2 astronomical units (more than 11 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun) to 35.6 astronomical units. The brighter star is Alpha Centauri A, or Rigil Kentaurus, which means "foot of the Centaur" in Arabic. It is also the fourth brightest star in our night sky, after Sirius, Canopus, and Arcturus. This star, whose age is estimated at about 4.6 billion years, could be a twin of our Sun in size, mass, and age. Centauri A is therefore similarly of the G2V spectral type. This yellow dwarf takes about 22 days to complete its rotation, so its speed is about 2.7 km/s. Due to its resemblance to our Sun, it has been the subject of numerous feature films. The movie Avatar is the best example of this. In this fictional world, Pandora is the exomoon of a gas giant called Polyphemus, which orbits Alpha Centauri A. Humanoid beings, the Na'vi, evolve on this exomoon in the best possible way, alongside atypical fauna and dense, intelligent flora. Now it remains to be discovered whether a planet exists in the habitable zone of this star. Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory, located in the Atacama Desert (Chile), were surprised by the sighting of a bright point near Alpha Centauri A. For the moment, it is only a hypothesis, but we can speak of a planet candidate. It would be a hot planet smaller than Neptune and could be located in the habitable zone. Enough to keep us dreaming... But let's continue our exploration and zoom in on the last star in this triple system, Alpha Centauri C, more often called Proxima Centauri. It's not usually visible to the naked eye, but we can finally see it shine. This star, located just over four light-years from Earth, is the closest star to our Sun. Its average luminosity is relatively low compared to the two neighboring stars we just explored. Proxima Centauri is a red star, with a spectral type of M5.5Ve, indicating a red main sequence.
