Residents of the village of Obala in the Akmola region are inviting large, low-income families to live in their village through an online listserv, offering free housing and jobs. This is their way of preserving the local school and preserving the village's existence. Only two families have responded so far. Obala, with approximately 300 remaining residents, is located in a picturesque area 250 kilometers from the capital, surrounded by pine and birch groves. Nearby is the unique salt lake, Kara Ungir. According to official data, approximately 40% of Kazakhstan's population lives in rural areas. After the collapse of the USSR, and in the thirty years since the country's independence, most villages have fallen into disrepair due to the closure of industries and rampant corruption. Currently, 88% of all rural residents live in 3,500 villages. Kazakh authorities have promised to allocate 800 billion tenge over five years for infrastructure construction in rural areas.
