From their base in Camp Rhino, southwest of Kandahar, a Marine convoy of more than 40 vehicles drove down Highway 1 before dawn on Friday. The airport is to become an arrival point for U-S military flights and humanitarian aid. The runway of the one-time Taliban and al-Qaida stronghold was littered with unexploded ordnance and pocked by bomb craters. U-S Marines cleared debris and searched for booby traps and land mines on Friday. Burned-out and mangled aircraft, hit during air raids in previous weeks, sat on the tarmac. A spokesman for the U-S marines in Kandahar, Captain David Romley, said the marines intended to "secure the airport for any additional future operations that the United States and the Afghani government may want us to conduct."
