It consists of riding bulls or wild horses. During pre-Hispanic times, ancient Mexicans performed jaripeos as a form of war training, as riding bulls and wild horses required great skill and physical strength. With the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico, this tradition merged with Spanish bull riding customs, giving rise to the jaripeos as we know them today. During the 17th and 18th centuries, jaripeos became very popular in Mexico and were held during religious and patron saint festivals. Over time, jaripeo has become a very popular activity in many parts of Mexico, especially in the north of the country. Today, jaripeos are held at various celebrations, such as fairs, patron saint festivals, weddings, and other special events. During a jaripeo, the rider attempts to stay on the bull or wild horse for as long as possible, while the animal tries to throw him or her to the ground. Bull riding is considered a more dangerous activity than horse riding, as bulls can be more unpredictable and aggressive than horses. Jaripeo is considered an art form in Mexico and is highly valued by Mexicans as a display of skill, courage, and dexterity. Today, jaripeos remain one of the most popular and deeply rooted traditions in Mexico and remain a part of Mexican culture and heritage.
