There is a lot of confusion in the Enneagram world about explaining the psychology of the Enneatype 4; the reason is because it's often explained in a stereotypical and superficial way. 4s aren't sad or depressed people; in fact, most of the 4s I know are open, happy, and enthusiastic. What happens to 4s is that they experience their emotions very intensely, and that's why they can identify with the moods of all the Enneatypes, especially the anger, frustration, rage, and self-criticism characteristic of the Enneatype 1. Without a good identification, the Enneagram is useless and can even be counterproductive: just like in medicine, a misdiagnosis can lead to treatment that may be worse than the disease. If 4s misidentify with the 1, they will be unable to truly understand how their personality works and will only focus on superficial aspects of their arrow to 1, such as anger and perfectionism.
