Stop Squirrels from Stealing Your Strawberries: My DIY Protection Plan šŸ“šŸæļø

Every year, just as my strawberries start to ripen… the squirrels get to them first. So this season, I built a flip-top strawberry cage to finally protect the harvest—and make it easy to actually pick and maintain the bed. In this video, I walk through the full process of building and installing these hardware cloth cages, what worked, what I’d change, and the unexpected challenges (like uneven ground and replanting the entire bed). The goal wasn’t just to build something—it was to create a solution that actually works in a real garden, over a full season. If you’ve struggled with birds, squirrels, or frustrating netting, this might be a simple and practical alternative. I’ll be sharing updates later in the season to see if this actually keeps the squirrels out once the strawberries start ripening. — 🌱 Project details: • Flip-top design for easy access • Black vinyl-coated hardware cloth (1/4 inch) • Lightweight hinged lids • Built to fit a long in-ground strawberry bed — šŸ“ Part of my goal to grow 650+ lbs of food this year in Ontario (Zone 6) Subscribe to follow along as the season unfolds, including my raspberry trellis fix in the next video.
