A swap body (also known as a swap body (WB), swap body, swap body platform, WAB, swap body, or in Switzerland, swap body or WELAB for short) is an interchangeable load carrier that – similar to an ISO container – can be separated from the carrier vehicle (truck, etc.). For use in combined transport, the swap body must be equipped with devices that allow transfer to the railway (UIC 592-4). This is made possible by gripping edges located on the underside of the swap body. Cranes at container terminals have special gripping arms for this purpose, which can grasp the swap bodies from the sides and lift them. Like ISO containers, the swap bodies are connected to the trucks, trailers (carriages), and freight wagons intended for their transport by means of pivots (so-called twistlocks). The basic locking dimension of a swap body, at 5820 mm long, corresponds to that of a 20-foot ISO container, so swap bodies and ISO containers can be transported on the same carrier vehicles without conversion. The advantages of swap bodies over ISO containers are their pallet-sized interior width and more flexible dimensions.
