FITASC Mounts Explained: Parallel vs Two-Piece | Sporting Clays Shotgun How-To with Nick Berry

In this episode of The Clay Lab, we’re joined by Nicolas “Nick” Berry, the accomplished B&P and Kolar-sponsored Sporting Clays shooter and creator of the Little Trapper YouTube channel. Known for his deep understanding of both the art and science of shooting, Nick breaks down two essential FITASC gun mounts—the Parallel Mount and the Two-Piece Mount—offering viewers a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of the sport’s most accomplished competitors and instructors. Nick’s teaching style blends technical precision with real-world practicality, making this lesson valuable for shooters of all levels. Through slow-motion demonstrations and clear explanations, he highlights how subtle variations in posture, hand placement, and gun movement affect visual connection and target control. The Parallel Mount emphasizes stability and consistent gun presentation, while the Two-Piece Mount offers fluidity and adaptability for a variety of target lines. Understanding when and how to use each can dramatically improve your FITASC performance—and Nick makes those distinctions clear and applicable to real-course situations. Beyond his instructional insight, Nicolas Berry brings a wealth of competitive experience to the table. He has distinguished himself as a National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) Open Team Member, Multi-State Champion, Regional FITASC Champion, and International Concurrent National Champion—a résumé that reflects both consistency and elite-level execution across disciplines. His knowledge is rooted not only in performance but also in a lifelong passion for the outdoors and marksmanship. Originally from Paris, France, Nick began hunting with his father at just three years old, taking his first birds by the age of six. That early foundation in fieldcraft evolved into a lifelong relationship with the shotgun. Before turning his full focus to shooting sports, Nick pursued rugby at a national level from the age of 10 through 30, competing with the same drive that now fuels his success on the course. After sustaining several injuries, he redirected that competitive spirit into a new pursuit—sporting clays—where his analytical approach and discipline quickly made him a standout. In addition to his competitive career, Nick holds dual master’s degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering and founded a design firm that grew to 80 professionals across Europe and Asia. His ability to merge technical precision with creative vision carries over seamlessly into his approach to shooting instruction. After moving to the United States in 2016, Nick served as Director of Operations in North America for Laporte before launching Little Trapper, a platform dedicated to showcasing world-class events, detailed shoot overviews, and educational insights for shooters worldwide. Today, Nick and his wife Cat own and operate Rock Creek Shooting Club near Boise, Idaho—a destination where technical mastery meets a love of the sport. Tune in to this episode to elevate your FITASC fundamentals and gain firsthand insight from a shooter who embodies dedication, craftsmanship, and international experience.
