Stages are typically abbreviated using Roman numerals. The stage of thyroid cancer is determined by a combination of the following three TNM categories (TNM classification). ・T Category: The extent of the primary tumor* ・N Category: The size and number of cancer cells that have metastasized to lymph nodes in the upper neck and mediastinum (the area of ​​the chest between the left and right lungs, including the heart, esophagus, and trachea) ・M Category: Whether the cancer has metastasized to organs distant from where it first developed *A primary tumor is cancer at its primary site (the area where the cancer first developed). Thyroid cancers of the papillary, follicular, and poorly differentiated types generally have a good prognosis in younger people, so the stage changes once the age of 55 is reached.
