For example, the long "u": In the canton of Uri, "Haus" is "Hüüs," in Obwalden and Nidwalden it's "Huis," and in Engelberg it's "Höis." In the rest of Central Switzerland, it's "Huus." The same applies to "Muus," "Puur," "gruusig," etc. 🗣 The long "ü" is also pronounced quite differently in Central Switzerland: In Nidwalden, fire is pronounced "Feyr," in Obwalden and Uri "Fiir," in Engelberg "Fuir," and in the cantons of Lucerne, Schwyz, and Zug "Füür." 🚧 Dialect boundaries that run through the whole of Switzerland often also run through Central Switzerland. For example, the long "a" became a long "o" in the north (with the exception of Zurich German): "Straass" became "Strooss," "gaad" became "goot," "Aabig" became "Oobig." Most of Lucerne German belongs to the northern O-area, as do small parts of Zug German and Schwyz German. In and around Einsiedeln, you'll find the special form "ou," as in "Strouss," "goud," and "Oubig." 🌨 It's similar with "schniie" and "schneie," or "buue" and "boue." In the south (including most of Central Switzerland), people say "schniie" and "buue," while in the Lucerne region and in the northern parts of the cantons of Zug and Schwyz, the North Swiss German pronunciation is "schneie" and "boue." Not only phonetic features, but also specific dialect words can reveal a dialect: Saying "rüüdig" identifies you as being from Lucerne, and "Gumel" for potatoes 🥔 is only used in the canton of Schwyz. However, such telltale dialect words are quite rare. 🔔 The quickest way to recognize a dialect is by its sound—by the specific combination of different phonetic features. But it does take a bit of practice if you want to master dialect. Can you guess which Central Swiss canton the man at the end of the video comes from?
