Canon Rebel T4i (650D) Review Part 1

I take a closer look at the Canon Rebel T4i (650D). My initial impressions of this camera are good, the touch screen is very responsive. I have not seen a camera with a touch screen that performs to this level, this camera uses a capacitive touch screen and supports multiple gestures. For the first time Canon now allows autofocus in video mode, this is employed through the use of a hybrid focusing system. This system uses some of the pixels on the image sensor as focus sensors. This bypasses the problem of the main phase detect AF sensors not being able to see when the mirror is up in live view mode. The second part of Canon's new hybrid focusing system is the new STM lenses. With the release of this camera Canon also announced 2 lenses which support their STM technology. The EF-S 18-135 IS STM is available in a kit with the T4i at a price of $1199.99 USD. It is also available with the older non-STM EF-S 18-55 IS II for $949.99 USD or body only for $849.99 USD. A new pancake lens, the 40mm f/2.8 STM is also available separately for a price of $199.99 USD. Although I have not tested image quality in detail yet (I will in Part 2) although the specs look promising. This camera retrains the 18 megapixel resolution (newer sensor design though) of the T2i/T3i but the image processing is updated. This camera features the newer Digic 5 image processor which allows for a maximum continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second. The new processor should mean lower noise at higher iso settings also. A new all cross type 9 autofocus system rounds out the package.
