Digha is the most popular beach resort in West Bengal and a tourist spot located southwest of Kolkata. Digha was originally known as Berkul and was discovered by the British in the late 18th century during the time of Warren Hastings. In a letter by Warren Hastings to his wife (1780 AD), it is referred to as the “Brighton of the East”. Digha beach offers both sunrise and sunset. After independence, he convinced the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, to develop Digha as a beach resort.
