Apartheid Tropical | 4. Prefere-se branco

Brazil prohibits the entry of Africans and massively finances European immigration to whiten the nation over three generations. Job advertisements proclaim "white preferred." But in the far south, Black workers like Antônio Baobab create unions, newspapers, and collective organizations, resisting the extinction project and building lasting Black communities. About this title Tropical Apartheid tells the story of how, after the abolition of slavery, the Brazilian state hid sophisticated mechanisms of racial segregation in its laws with the aim of eliminating the Black population from the country, structuring itself from micro-histories that help reconstruct a larger history. Each episode has a thematic axis and at least one Black character as a guiding thread of the narrative that helps explain the legal mechanisms of segregation in Brazil. These are the "micro-histories." SUPPORT This episode was only possible thanks to the generous contribution of our supporters.
