During the Battle of the 20th Ward, in the Owl Suppression Arc, colossal kagunes emerged from the ground, destroying all of Tokyo in the process. Afterward, the characters of Tokyo Ghoul are transported to another dimension where they meet a cosmic guardian. He explains that an error in their universe's timeline has caused a catastrophic event to occur at the wrong time, but that he is working to fix it. However, seeing that it will take longer than expected, the guardian proposes that the ghouls explore other universes and realities completely different from their own.
