In 1996, film director Nagisa Oshima suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. His wife, Akiko Koyama, at the age of 61, began her first experience of cooking and caring for him. Words of encouragement sounded like she was being told she was a "failed wife," and she fell into caregiver depression, requiring her to enter a psychiatric ward. After four hospitalizations, she gradually began to regain her sense of self through swimming and cooking classes. Eventually, she was able to smile at her husband's insults. Even when he yelled "You stupid woman!" at her, she says, "I wanted him to take his anger out on me so he could live a long life." Eleven years of home care. Every day she held his hand and asked, "Daddy, did anything good happen today?" On January 15, 2013, Nagisa Oshima passed away at the age of 80. One-third of their marriage was spent caring for him. Yet she firmly states: "It wasn't a negative experience."
