What Does "In the Beginning" Actually Mean in Hebrew — The Word Bereshit Explained

Everyone knows Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." It is the most quoted verse in the Bible. But almost nobody has read it in Hebrew. And Hebrew does something the English cannot show you. The very first word of the entire Bible — bereshit — is grammatically incomplete. It is built like an arrow, pointing forward, not a full stop. The word for "created" — bara — is reserved exclusively for something brought into existence from nothing. No human being in the entire Hebrew Bible is ever described doing it. The name for God — Elohim — is grammatically plural but takes a singular verb, and scholars have debated what that means for over a thousand years. The phrase "formless and empty" — tohu va bohu — appears only one other time in the entire Old Testament, in Jeremiah, describing judgment. And the Spirit hovering over the waters uses a word found elsewhere only for a mother eagle watching over her nest.
