All organs, as well as the entire body, are in constant movement and in synchrony with each other and with all the structures that surround them. When this synchrony is disturbed, we are faced with a visceral osteopathic dysfunction. These dysfunctions are characterized by viscerospasms, decreased mobility and motility of the viscera, decreased vascularization, visceral ptosis, adhesions resulting from inflammation, infections, surgical interventions, trauma, incorrect posture for too long, among others. From the osteopathic perspective, these visceral changes can also have sympathetic, parasympathetic, hormonal origins, tissue restriction and decreased serous fluid present in the abdominal cavity. The viscera present two movements: mobility and motility. Visceral mobility: refers to the passive accommodation movements that the viscera undergo mainly in response to respiratory movements, dynamic body demands and postural changes. These movements depend on the freedom provided by the viscerofacial system. This system interposes the viscera, forming membranous layers with serous fluid that allow intervisceral sliding, called visceral joints. The continuous variation of intrathoracic and intra-abdominal pressure generated by the diaphragm during respiratory cycles forces the viscera of these cavities to move in the three planes (sagittal, frontal and transverse). Such movements are important for the overall visceral dynamics and especially for the balance of internal mechanical tensions. Visceral motility: refers to the active embryonic movements of the viscera. These are movements that are not directly related to the hollow viscera, but are inherent movements of all viscera. In general, three techniques for correcting visceral dysfunctions are described: Direct Technique: these are short lever techniques, indicated for treating visceral mobility dysfunctions. Indirect Technique: these are long lever techniques, also used to treat visceral mobility dysfunctions. Induction Techniques: these are techniques used to treat visceral mobility dysfunctions. The main effects of visceral manipulation are: elimination of reflex spasm of the smooth muscles of the visceral tract; stretching of the fascia in order to release adhesions and provide elasticity and freedom of movement. Visceral osteopathy is indicated for: Hiatal hernia; Visceral ptosis; Intestinal constipation and reflux (including in babies); Hepatobiliary disorders; Cardiac disorders; Kidney disorders; Menstrual cycle disorders; Decreased immunity; Systemic pathologies of visceral origin, among others.
