El descubrimiento de petróleo en 1914 convirtió a Venezuela en un país con gran potencial para atraer inmigrantes tanto nacionales como internacionales. El comienzo de la historia moderna de Venezuela como gran productor fue la erupción del pozo Barroso 2 en Cabimas en 1922.
