How the Muslims Reached the Gates of the Persian Capital

To kill an empire, the Rashidun Caliphate had to undergo a brutal, painful military evolution. In Episode 7 of our Persian Campaign series (Season 3), Saad ibn Abi Waqqas leads his battle-hardened veterans into Al-Sawad: the Black Land of Iraq. This dense network of deep irrigation canals, flooded rice paddies, and thick palm orchards was a logistical death trap engineered to strip the Arab forces of their greatest asset: mobility. Driven by the brilliant tactical pursuit of vanguard commander Zuhra ibn al-Hawiyya, the Rashidun force fights through the ruins of ancient Babylon and Kutha, arriving at the western gates of the Sassanid metropolitan capital: Bahurasheer. Faced with massive baked-brick walls, heavy torsion artillery (Arradat), and a desperate, starving imperial garrison, the desert warriors must master an entirely alien military science. From digging complex zigzagging approach trenches to building heavy wooden mantlets covered in wet animal hides, witness the gruelling, mechanical reality of 7th-century siege engineering. 📺 Catch Up on Previous Episodes (Season 3): Episode 1 (Battle of Babylon): • The Day Persia Unleashed Its War Elephants...
