Radio broadcasting in Egypt began in the 1920s with a number of private stations. On May 31, 1934, the voice of announcer Ahmed Salem was heard, declaring, "This is Cairo. This is the official inauguration of the Egyptian government's wireless radio station." This was done in agreement with the Marconi Company, but the agreement was terminated in 1947. The number of Egyptian radio stations initially consisted of four, and has now grown to ten.
