Salmon fly fishing on the River Spey as we start our first day on Tulchan’s D Beat, with heavy overnight rain pushing the river up and adding a bit of colour. It didn’t take long for things to come alive. One of the lads in our party hooked and landed a fish early on, which immediately lifts the whole mood on a day like this. In rising water, that first fish is always a real confidence boost and a sign there could be more moving through. The conditions felt spot on for it. Extra height, a touch of colour, and that sense that fresh fish might be running. From there it was all about settling into the beat, covering the water properly and hoping for another pull. The Tulchan Estate offers some classic Spey water, and even with the river pushing up, there’s plenty to go at if you keep adapting your approach.
