Velocity Trap, AI-Native Teams, Engineering Management | Thomas England, CTO @ Origin Smart Controls
Thomas England is the CTO of Origin Smart Controls — a company building software for IoT device management in commercial buildings. Origin came out of the mechanical and electrical engineering world, not the software world. That's the whole point: mechanical engineers and software engineers build the platform together, so it solves the problem the way a building engineer understands it, not the way a developer assumes it. Their clients include the NHS and a major UK broadcaster. Thomas has been in tech for 12 years and now leads engineering at Origin. We spoke about how AI-native engineering has changed the industry, and where it's heading next. In this episode, Thomas breaks down: Why most IoT dashboard platforms fail — they give you a toolbox, not a solution The engineering triangle: quality, accuracy, velocity — and why AI breaks the balance Why you can't blame Claude or Codex when your production breaks Two types of AI resistance in engineering teams and how to handle each Why point-solution SaaS is in trouble — and what Atlassian should be worried about If you're an engineering leader trying to figure out AI adoption, a founder building in an old-school industry, or anyone watching the SaaS market shift under vibe coding — this episode is for you. 00:00 Intro 02:50 From Office Admin to CTO 07:27 The Main Problem Origin Solves 13:42 How Origin Wins NHS Trusts 17:02 Turning Customer Requests Into Universal Features 22:11 The Engineering Triangle: Quality, Accuracy, Velocity 29:29 Why You Can't Blame Claude for Bugs 30:28 AI Resistance in Engineering Teams 37:24 Atlassian, Jira & The Vibe Coding Threat 44:57 The Token Economics Problem If you enjoyed this episode, please like and subscribe, share it with your network, and leave a comment. 👉 Follow George: LinkedIn: / georgehelgesen Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5a7OB49...
