The prospect of a consecrated life or running a parish seemed far off, as for him, religion was more a matter of custom than anything else. Faced with the imminent death of his only brother, who was his pillar, his role model, Rafael Pérez Huete had no choice but to propose a pact to God: "If you save my brother, I'll become a priest." He rebelled greatly and took a while to understand that He is the only One who can "resurrect your life from the ashes, because His plan is more wonderful than yours."
