For this reason, the Ponte di Legno-Tonale consortium launched a project in 2008 to cover the glacier with geotextile sheets, a practice that is repeated every year with the aim of protecting it during the hottest periods. "The University of Milan has determined that these sheets have the capacity to reflect 52% of solar radiation," explained Vania Zampatti, of the Ponte di Legno-Tonale consortium's press office. "We currently cover a surface area of ​​110,000 square meters of glacier. We are aware that this is not the solution to saving the glacier, but it is a small attempt to limit the damage."
