Darcy’s Undressing and Lizzie’s Stolen Coat: Reading the Costumes of Pride & Prejudice (2005)

In this video I dive DEEP into the costumes of Joe Wright’s 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (which also happens to be my favourite movie of all time) I talk about: There are many anachronistic choices in this film but they’re not, in my opinion, ‘mistakes’. How Wright uses a date argument so he could do away with the super high waistlines (also known as Empire lines later on) but how that inadvertently assists in the characterisation and contrast of two characters. Lizzie earthen-toned colour palette and why her lack of print, adornment and jewellery are reflective of her character. How Darcy’s four-part costume arc tells us his whole internal landscape without hearing a single piece of dialogue. We compare the proposal scenes and how the setting, framing, even the weather, symbolise the characters emotional state. The matching muddy hems! Lizzie’s stolen* coat (*In my opinion, anyway) Why the anachronism of Lizzie not wearing gloves (when everyone else does) is actually very important for the hand flex scene. The song played three times and how it connects those scenes and those characters. How water is a character The comparative costuming for the Bennet sisters and how this serves as a visual shorthand for their personalities when there’s not enough time to give them full dialogue. Stripes vs Florals: The emotion of print language and what it tells us about the characters wearing it How Caroline uses fashion as a weapon The quilted bed cover that could (hopefully) be a nod to the real bedcover Jane Austen made with her mother and sister. The neoclassical and Ancient Greek sculptures and their symbolism in Lizzie and Darcy’s story. How caged birds are a metaphor for how different characters view marriage Janes love language is ribbons!
