Zubeen’s Songs, People’s Emotions: Marmita Mitra Faces Heat Again. GUWAHATI: Singer Marmita Mitra has once again landed in controversy after she allegedly performed a distorted version of Zubeen Garg’s popular song ‘Bahi Bahi’during a show on Thursday night. This marks the second such incident involving the Jalpaiguri-born singer, who is currently based in Guwahati. She had earlier faced backlash last year for allegedly rendering ‘Mayabini Ratir Bukut’ in a distorted manner, drawing sharp criticism from music lovers across Assam. Responding to the earlier controversy, Marmita had said, “A video of me singing Mayabini in a distorted tune has gone viral. That was from my first live performance. I did not intentionally distort the song—if there were any mistakes, I sincerely apologize.” In the wake of the latest controversy, a section of artists along with the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club has announced plans to boycott events featuring her. Addressing a press conference held at Ma Studio in Rajgarh on Friday, representatives of the organization, including Ajay Phukan and Boikunthaprince Pathak, strongly criticized Mitra over her rendition of Zubeen Garg’s songs. Speaking at the briefing, Ajay Phukan alleged, “Marmita Mitra has distorted Zubeen Garg’s songs. She has disrespected his music.” The organization also held certain Bihu committees responsible for inviting her to perform. The group warned that if Mitra does not issue a public apology within 24 hours, they will file a case at Dispur Police Station. “She has no sense of responsibility towards Assam. We will not allow anyone to do business in the name of Zubeen Garg,” Phukan said. He further added that the artist community is planning to organize a special programme in honour of Zubeen Garg and reiterated their demand for justice. The group also urged Bihu committees not to invite “such singers,” alleging that Mitra performs only songs originally sung by Zubeen.
