🌸 Clitoria ternatea (blue pea) and EFSA: What does Europe really say? 🌸 In this video, I present a comprehensive update on the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) assessment of Clitoria ternatea (dried blue pea flowers). Following a notification for its commercialization in Europe, EFSA issued safety objections, primarily as a precaution. What should we remember from the official report? ✅ The flower's composition is well characterized (proteins, antioxidants, cyclotides, etc.). ✅ Cyclotides (naturally occurring cyclic proteins) have been identified, but no cyclotides with problematic effects have been detected in Clitoria ternatea. ✅ Traditionally, the flowers have been used to color food in Asia for centuries, with no known side effects. ⚠️ However, their use in infusions (as beverages) does not have as solid a history of use as food coloring. ⚠️ Cyclotides, although present in low doses, have been little studied in vivo: as a precautionary principle, EFSA therefore prefers to refuse their authorization without further data.
