Okayama Korakuen Garden is one of Japan’s most celebrated feudal lord gardens and is recognized as one of the “Three Great Gardens of Japan,” alongside Kenroku-en in Ishikawa Prefecture and Kairaku-en in Ibaraki Prefecture. Construction of the garden began in the early Edo period under Ikeda Tsunamasa, the second lord of the Okayama Domain, and was completed over the course of approximately fourteen years. The garden is designed as a traditional strolling garden, featuring expansive lawns, ponds, artificial hills, and tea fields arranged in beautiful harmony, allowing visitors to enjoy seasonal scenery as they walk through the grounds. One of its most iconic viewpoints is Yuishinzan Hill, a small hill located near the center of the garden, from which visitors can overlook the entire landscape and enjoy a stunning view of Okayama Castle rising gracefully in the background. Korakuen also preserves several historic structures, including Enyo-tei, where the feudal lord once entertained distinguished guests, as well as a Noh stage and traditional tea houses that reflect the cultural elegance of the Edo period. Throughout the year, the garden reveals a different kind of beauty each season—cherry blossoms in spring, the enchanting nighttime illumination event known as “Fantasy Garden” in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene snowy landscapes in winter—captivating visitors from around the world. More than simply a decorative garden, Korakuen historically served as a place of relaxation and hospitality for the feudal lord and his guests. The tea fields within the garden continue a tradition dating back to the Edo period, and every May, the Tea-Picking Festival is held to celebrate this enduring cultural heritage.
