The Glorified Christ appears among the seven golden lampstands, eyes like a flame of fire, voice like the roar of many waters. He dictates seven letters to the churches — Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea — each one a warning, a promise, or both. Then the heavens open. John stands before the throne of God, encircled by a rainbow like emerald, where twenty-four elders cast their crowns and four living creatures cry "Holy, Holy, Holy" without ceasing. A scroll sealed with seven seals sits in the right hand of the One on the throne. No one in heaven or on earth is worthy to open it — until the Lion of the tribe of Judah steps forward, revealed as a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, with seven horns and seven eyes. The seals break open one by one. The white horse rides out. The bright red horse is granted to take away peace from the earth. The black horse carries scales. And the pale green horse — its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed close behind. The souls under the altar cry out "How long, O Lord, holy and true?" The sixth seal shakes the heavens until the sun turns black like sackcloth, the moon becomes blood red, and the stars fall like unripe figs shaken from a tree. Then, in the silence between judgment and mercy, 144,000 from every tribe of Israel are sealed — and a multitude too large to count stands before the throne in white robes washed in the blood of the Lamb.
