KOMPAS.TV - Iranian authorities have declared a six-day period of national mourning for the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The events will begin Saturday and continue through Monday, with the focus being on the capital, Tehran, and include a public wake, communal funeral prayers, and a grand procession in Azadi Square. Then, on Tuesday, the body of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be taken to the holy city of Qom. On Wednesday, July 8, Khamenei's coffin will be flown to neighboring Iraq. The entire procession will conclude on Thursday, July 9, 2026, with an official funeral ceremony at the Imam Reza mausoleum in the late leader's hometown. Amidst the funeral, US President Donald Trump claimed to have destroyed Iran during a speech at Mount Rushmore on Saturday local time. On the 250th anniversary of US Independence, Trump said, "Because we're good, we're giving Iran a week off," referring to the ongoing funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump also hinted that peace talks with Tehran would resume after the mourning period ends.
