Otto von Bismarck is considered the “architect” of this process, who used the Prussian army and bureaucracy to achieve unification. Germany was unified after fighting three wars within seven years against Austria, Denmark, and France. In January 1871, the King of Prussia, William I, was proclaimed the Emperor of Germany. 2. Unification of Italy In the middle of the 19th century, Italy was divided into seven states. Giuseppe Mazzini started the movement through “Young Italy,” but later King Victor Emmanuel II took leadership. Count Cavour defeated Austria through diplomatic alliances, and Giuseppe Garibaldi completed the unification by defeating Spanish rulers in Southern Italy with his armed volunteers. 3. The Strange Case of Britain The unification of Britain was not the result of a sudden revolution, but a long gradual process. In 1688, Parliament took away powers from the monarchy.
