Lampedusa, the largest of the Pelagie Islands, despite being the southernmost tip of Italy, is actually a piece of Africa in Europe. The island, in fact, geologically belongs to the African tectonic plate and is located further south than Algiers or Tunis. The definition of Lampedusa as the gateway to Europe is therefore extremely realistic. For this reason, I wanted to begin this short video with the monument "Gate of Lampedusa, Gate of Europe," dedicated to migrants lost at sea. Lampedusa has long been a point of arrival for migratory flows from the southern hemisphere, with the obvious repercussions this has on the island and its people. But fortunately, Lampedusa is much more than this. The beauty of its coastal landscapes, the clarity of its waters, and the unique atmosphere it exudes make the island an extraordinary destination for lovers of the authentic sea. It's no coincidence that Lampedusa boasts one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Rabbit Island, now a protected marine reserve due to the Caretta turtles that nest on its beach. Along the southern coast, there are countless inlets and coves suitable for swimming, and around the island there are numerous scenic points of interest, such as the evocative lighthouse at Punta Grecale, the sunsets at Punta Sottile, the ancient dammusi scattered inland, or the spectacular cliffs of the north coast. Although it has always been a crossroads of populations (Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, to name just a few), none have left tangible traces of their passage, except for the environmental damage resulting from reckless land management. After all, the imprint of the past lives on in the sensibilities of the locals, shaping their ancestral relationship with the sea. It's impossible to summarize Lampedusa; its multifaceted soul would require time and words.
