God's Wrath Is Not What You Think

What does God actually save us from? Is it from his desire to punish us, or is it something else entirely? In Part 2 of our deep dive into the book of Romans, we explore Romans 1:21-2:16 to challenge a common assumption about God’s anger and uncover a more ancient, restorative view of the Gospel. Many Christians are taught that God is like an executioner whose anger must be satisfied through punishment—a model often called Penal Substitutionary Atonement (PSA). But when Paul talks about the "wrath of God" in Romans 1, he describes it not as active thunderbolts of punishment, but as God "giving humans over" to their own destructive desires. Drawing on the insights of the early church fathers like Athanasius of Alexandria, we shift our perspective from a criminal trial to a clinic. We discuss how sin operates like a self-inflicted addiction or disease, how human choices carry natural spiritual consequences, and why God respects our free will rather than turning us into reluctant automatons. Ultimately, we look at how the parable of the Prodigal Son reveals a Father who allows us to experience the painful reality of walking away—only to run to us with open arms when we return.
