Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that attacks the immune system. When there is an imbalance in antibody production, the main symptoms begin to appear, generally caused by inflammation. It can manifest in a cutaneous form (with spots on the body) or in a systemic form, a more severe form that affects organs, including the kidneys. It is estimated that about 10% to 30% of lupus cases may develop Chronic Kidney Disease. With the development of an inflammatory process called lupus nephritis, the proper functioning of the kidneys can be compromised. If not closely monitored, this can progress to loss of kidney function.
