Iejima, a fierce battlefield during the Battle of Okinawa, was the setting for the film "Army in the Trees," which was released this year to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. While memories of the war have been passed down through the generations, little attention has been paid to how the people who lost their homes managed to hang on to life.
