Bujinkan Kata 拒技 Kyogi

From https://www.rojodojo.com A preview of my #bujinkan video exploring the kata 拒技 Kyogi. This name means repelling waza with the feeling of repelling the opponent’s attack. The strike to 時 toki certainly achieves this. The Japanese text refers to two main kyusho in this kata. The first, 時 toki, has a name that suggests seizing the moment or taking a chance or opportunity. When you attack it with this feeling, it changes the entire approach to the form. The second kyusho Hatsumi Sensei calls by 2 names in the Japanese text, the first is 陰 kage, the second うめぼし umeboshi, which is a dried or pickled plum. If you’ve seen these sitting in a bowl, you’ll probably know more about this kyusho. The strike is just above this point, and angled downwards. Next, I showed the variation of this kata that is often taught in the Bujinkan. The kick changes to a form of 鹿足 shika ashi. Different pronunciations of these kanji give us kasoku or roku ashi. All three of these names are used in the Bujinkan #martialarts curriculum to refer to different things. But the shika ashi we are doing here is the way Nagato Sensei shows this form on Soke’s koppojutsu video that was made so many years ago. And, last month, when I trained with Nagato, he taught this kata exactly this way. I added in the hanbo to attack these kyusho. I emphasized the use of shizenryoku with the weapon.
