West Coast Main Line and Merseyrail Trains at Liverpool Lime Street on May 14th 2026

3rd visit to Liverpool Lime Street, the terminus of the West Coast Main Line's Liverpool Branch, Chat Moss Line and Merseyrail's Wirral Line. Featuring services from Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, Transport For Wales, Transpennine Express and Merseyrail The former terminus of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in September 1830 was Liverpool Crown Street However it only last just under 6 years because it was too far out of Liverpool and was converted into a goods yard which would last until it closed in 1972. Liverpool Lime Street opened on August 15th 1836 although it wasn't construction wasn't finished until the following year When opened which proved popular at the time of opening it would expand several times first rebuilt between 1846 and 1849 by Edward Woods. Other expansions that have followed over the years include one in 1857, another in 1879 when a second parallel shed was added. The station was modernised in 1955 and then in 1962 electric trains from the West Coast Main Line began running however it wasn't until 1966 when the first intercity train ran directly between Liverpool and London Euston Electric trains began operating on the Chat Moss Line between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria via Newton-le-Willows in March 2015 when the line along with the city line to Wigan North Western via St Helens Central was electrified. A landslide occurred inside the Edge Hill Tunnel on February 28th 2017 which resulted in all the lines in and out of Liverpool Lime Street to close. Over 200 tonnes of debris had to be cleared and damaged overhead wires had to also repaired and wasn’t until March 8th when Liverpool Lime Street was back open. The recent station overhaul and remodelling took place between September 2017 and June 2018 which also enabled at the same time the replacement of signalling equipment that dated back to the 1940s as well as enabling retail outlets to be accommodated into the station and addition of new platforms being added too. Today there are 10 Platforms on the mainline although surprisingly Platforms 1-5 are gated whilst Platforms 6-10 are open and easily accessible. Avanti West Coast services to and from London Euston which are provided by Class 390 Pendolinos and 7 car Class 807 Everos built by Hitachi at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham which entered service on Avanti West Coat in Late 2024. Northern services with electric services provided by Class 331s and recently joined Class 323s being maintained at West Allerton operating services to Manchester Airport, Wigan North Western and Blackpool North whilst their DMU fleet of Class 150s, Class 156s and Class 195s operate the diesel services to Manchester Oxford Road and Warrington Central respectively. Transpennine Express services provided by Class 185s and Class 802 Novas with services to Cleethorpes via Warrington Central and Newcastle via Manchester Victoria and Leeds respectively with Class 397s only 3 trains a day direct to and from Glasgow Central East Midlands Railway services between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich via Sheffield, Nottingham and Ely are operated by Class 158 Sprinters and Class 170 Turbostars London Northwestern Railway runs half hourly service to and from Birmingham New Street served by Class 350s with one fast service that runs non stop between Runcorn and Crewe whilst the other stops at all stations such as Acton Bridge, Hartford and Winsford. Transport For Wales operates hourly to Chester via Runcorn now provided by Class 197s built by CAF in Newport Below ground is full of activity served by Merseyrail's Wirral Line via the Liverpool Loop which opened in 1977 Despite being just one platform, services averaging every 5 minutes to West Kirby, New Brighton, Ellesmere Port and Chester. Stadler Class 777s first introduced in January 2023 which are maintained at Kirkdale TMD which are nowadays the main fleet having taken over the PEPs Class 507s and 508s in 2024.
