There's a Lost Country Beneath the North Sea (Doggerland)
Doggerland was a real country beneath the North Sea — a lost land where Mesolithic hunter-gatherers lived for thousands of years before sea level rise slowly swallowed it. This is the true archaeology of how trawler nets, seismic surveys, and sediment cores rebuilt a drowned nation, and how new research on the Storegga tsunami just rewrote how the story ends. In 1931 the trawler Colinda hauled up a block of peat with a 12,000-year-old harpoon still inside it — proof that dry land, and people, once stood where the North Sea now runs 120 feet deep. Since then, researchers have mapped roughly 188,000 square kilometers of seabed, tracing the rivers, hills, and coastlines of a country that once covered some 46,000 square kilometers between Britain and continental Europe. We follow the Mesolithic hunters who lived there, the wind farms accidentally handing archaeology new data today, and the slow, centuries-long drowning that ended in an active scientific argument over exactly how much the Storegga tsunami actually finished.
