In case you don’t know about the timber depot in Dandeli, let me tell you—it's a huge, restricted government property where wood logs are stored and processed before being transferred. I have seen similar places elsewhere, and among them, Mongpong in West Bengal stands out. It is a very beautiful place where you get the chance to stay in a government forest department property. Omh organizes a bird-watching walk inside the depot, spending about two hours before returning. Even though it covers a vast area that may not be easy to explore in a single day, sometimes a short round trip is still worthwhile for a bird watcher. If you check eBird, you will see that the timber depot is a birding paradise. If there are more than six people, only then they will take you to the timber depot. They provide a jeep that can accommodate a maximum of nine people, and the total cost is 1,500, which will be divided among the attendees. A few things I want to mention about the timber depot based on my experience: When I visited in December, it was covered in fog in the morning, sometimes until 8 AM. When there is dense fog, birds generally don’t come out much, and even if some do, visibility remains poor. So for me, visiting the timber depot in December with Omh was not very satisfying due to time limitations. However, when we went in February, the sky was very clear, and the golden sunlight made the birds active from early morning. We reached there by 7 AM and started our birding with Pundalik. Pundalik is an old stuff of Omh. Generally, people visit the timber depot for confirmed sightings of specific birds such as the Malabar Pied Hornbill, Jungle Owlet, and Brown Boobook. But they also hope to spot the Brown-headed Barbet, Indian Nuthatch, Yellow Tit, Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Forest Wagtail, and a few others. At the timber depot, you have to pay ₹20 per person and ₹50 per camera. A guard patrols on a bike and collects the charges from bird watchers. It’s best if you have your own car and can spend the entire morning at the timber depot. But Dandeli is not just about the timber depot, guys! There’s also the Kali Adventure Camp and Kaadumane Homestay. If you stay there, you can access many forest patches by contacting dedicated local guides who can take you to lesser-known and restricted forest areas and lakes, where you might find many other exclusive birds.
