Erlesenes Ostpreußen: Raphael Iwanczuk über den Bildband „Das alte Ostpreußen“
In 1945, the German history of East Prussia came to an end. The memory of the land and its people lives on in its remarkably diverse literary heritage. East Prussia produced important authors, still known to a wide audience today, such as Johann Gottfried Herder, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Siegfried Lenz, Marion Dönhoff, Johannes Bobrowski, and Arno Surminski. Even after 1945, numerous books exploring East Prussia and its legacy were published in Germany, Poland, Russia, and Lithuania. In our series "Selected East Prussia," we would like to present particularly worthwhile novels, memoirs, poems, and non-fiction books that will help you get to know East Prussia and its past and present inhabitants better. Well-known classics alternate with lesser-known authors. Today, Raphael Iwanczuk presents a wonderful illustrated book that showcases old East Prussia with its monuments, cities, churches, landscapes, and people. The photographs, taken at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, convey to the viewer an impression of Königsberg during the Imperial era, of well-known cities such as Memel, Tilsit, and Rastenburg, of the harsh realities of rural life, the bustling markets in the cities, and impressive engineering structures like bridges and mills. With the accompanying texts by author Arno Surminski, a bygone, yet not forgotten, era comes alive. Raphael Iwanczuk studied Comparative Literature, Romance Studies, and German Philology at LMU Munich, the Sorbonne in Paris, and the University of Göttingen. Since March 2015, he has worked in press and public relations at Ellert & Richter Publishers in Hamburg.
