Suena la Marimba | Mariela aka Marimba Pichardo | TEDxSantoDomingo

Music in the 21st century has been exposed to technological sounds and rhythms. Mariela discusses how her grandfather's musical legacy has made it possible to revive Dominican rhythms that had been lost or sidelined. She also presents two pieces featuring predominantly Dominican regional rhythms. Mariela Pichardo “Marimba” is a young Dominican musician, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer born in Santo Domingo in 1988. From childhood, she always showed an interest in music. At the age of four, her mother gave her her first instrument, a guitar. At ten, she began experimenting with percussion instruments, specifically the güira and tambourine. Her initial musical training was self-taught, but after finishing high school, she enrolled at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), where she spent four years pursuing a degree in Music Theory and Education. During his university years, through a fellow musician, he met Antonio Vicioso, a researcher of the island's cultural roots and founder of "Aumbata," a musical group based on the traditional rhythms of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Marimba was part of this group for a little over five years. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
