Many a song has been written about a place called heaven. One song eluded to the fact that heaven was a place on Earth. In the 90's a rock and roll band belted out lyrics referring to a door they wanted to knock on in heaven. One of the saddest origins of a song was about the songwriters son passing away and crying in heaven. Of course, there is one of the most popular heaven songs that refers to a stairway that leads to the unseen place. When it comes to trees, however, there is only one with the word heaven in it. That tree is the Tree of Heaven or Ailanthus altissima. The name is derived from the Ambonese word ailanto, meaning "heaven-tree" or "tree reaching for the sky". It is an evasive and ruthless tree that all but destroys any other species that tries to encroach on its territory. It does this by secreting toxins into the soil to prevent other trees from growing. It is considered a noxious weed in Australia, the United States and many other countries. The tree also resprouts vigorously when cut, making its eradication difficult and time consuming.
