It's only three months into 2024. This is my third visit to my grandfather, who lives alone in Ibusuki, Kagoshima Prefecture. I usually take the Shinkansen, but this time I needed a car for some reason, and I had to drive the 2,000 kilometers round trip in three days... Long-distance driving is a big deal, and even though I love driving, I decided that a long drive after work would be too dangerous... This time, I'm taking the plunge and heading to Kagoshima on the Sunflower. This ship is completely different from the one I rode on over 20 years ago. The inside of the ship is like a hotel. An elevator takes you from the parking floor to the passenger cabin. As a couple, we booked a private superior room. It's not particularly spacious, but it's just right for a 15-hour voyage. It has a toilet and a shower. There's also a TV, air conditioning, and a refrigerator, so everything is just right. The buffet is served in the onboard restaurant shortly after we set sail. Fresh sashimi and other dishes reminiscent of Kyushu are on the menu. After the meal, we refreshed in the large observation bath. We could enjoy a real bath even on the boat. We thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious time soaking while watching the night view from inside the boat. Freed from driving, the drinks went down easy. When we woke up the next morning, we'd soon be in Kyushu. After having breakfast at a restaurant, we finally arrived at Shibushi Port in Kagoshima Prefecture. It took about three hours from Shibushi to Ibusuki. On the way, we stopped at Ibusuki Roadside Station and indulged in the Ibukara Donburi, which the couple had eaten last time and become addicted to.
