How to care for flowering plants in pots on balconies and terraces in summer? What should you especially remember during hot weather, heavy rains, and vacation trips? This is the topic of today's video from the "Balconies and Terraces" series. Enjoy! In summer, balconies and terraces often transform into colorful, flower-filled oases. Geraniums, surfinias, supertunias, begonias, sundevilleas, lobelias, and verbenas can bloom continuously until the first frost, provided they are properly cared for. High temperatures, heavy rainfall, or vacations can affect their appearance and condition. So how do you care for flowering plants in pots in summer? The most important thing, of course, is to water and fertilize them regularly. Remember, however, to avoid overwatering and always plant them in pots with drainage holes in the bottom so that excess water can drain freely and prevent root rot. This is especially important during rainy weather. However, there is an exception. If we're going on a short vacation, lasting a few days or a week, or if several days of hot weather without rain are forecast, we can place smaller pots, window boxes, or containers on a tray of water or in a larger container of water during this time, if possible, to maintain moisture in the soil for longer periods when we don't have the opportunity or time to approach the plants with a watering can. In such a situation, if we have, for example, an automatic lawn irrigation system, we can also move the flowering pots to a location where the water from the sprinklers can reach and water the flowering plants as well. For the hottest periods or when we're away, we can also move our flowering plants to the shade, where the soil doesn't dry out as quickly as in the sun. When the temperature drops or after returning from vacation, they can return to their sunny location. When caring for balcony and patio plants in summer, remember to fertilize. Geraniums, Supertunias, and other petunias, in particular, consume a lot of nutrients. To bloom profusely throughout the season, we need to replenish them. These species can even be fed with every watering. Other species planted in pots should be fertilized about once a week or every two weeks. The smaller the pot, the more frequently these plants should be fertilized. They should also be fertilized more frequently during rainy periods, as rain and frequent watering quickly leach macro- and micronutrients from the soil. Remember that it's best to apply fertilizer to damp soil, and always follow the dosage and directions on the fertilizer packaging. After heavy rains, it's always a good idea to check for standing water in the saucers or plant pots and pour out any excess water to prevent the roots from remaining submerged, as they can begin to rot. Furthermore, remove any broken stems or damaged flowers, as if left on the plants during wet weather, they can be quickly attacked by fungal diseases. Another important rule of thumb for summer care for flowering plants in pots is removing faded flowers and inflorescences, especially if you have species that set seeds. This allows plants to bloom longer and more abundantly because they don't waste energy on seed formation, but instead devote it to the formation of new flower buds. In July and August, also inspect plants for pests, including aphids, spider mites, and thrips, as well as snails and ants, which mainly affects patio containers or pots placed in gardens. Aphids and ants are often present together. Aphids transmit plant diseases, suck plant sap, and destroy new growth; there's no doubt they are considered pests. You can use a pesticide of your choice, such as a spray, to control them. Ants, on the other hand, are generally not considered typical plant pests. However, if they establish an anthill in a potted plant and also breed aphids, they become a threat to our plants and are often a nuisance when dining on the terrace where they nest. Ants feed on the sweet honeydew secreted by aphids, protecting their colonies from their natural enemies and spreading them to other plants. As a result, an aphid infestation can develop much more quickly. And if they establish a nest in a potted plant, especially if the soil is light and permeable, the tunnels they carve cause the soil to dry out more quickly, making it harder for the plants to...
