The God of Small Things is Roy's debut novel about the childhood experiences of fraternal twins whose lives are destroyed by the "Love Laws" prevalent in 1960s Kerala, India. It is semi-autobiographical in that it incorporates, embellishes, and greatly supplements events from Roy's family history. Ammu the daughter of Pappachi and Mammachi and the brother of Chacko married Babu in order to escape from his maternal family. Chacko enjoys all the privileges, one such is studying in Oxford. He married an English lady Margaret. Whereas Ammu is ill-treated by Babu an alcoholic. Ammu returns to Ayemenem with her twin children Rahel and Estha. Likewise, Margaret leaves Chacko and lives with Joe. After Joe's death, she visits Ayemenem with her daughter Sophie Mol. Rahel, Estha, and Sophie become friends. Meanwhile, Ammu falls in love with an untouchable Velutha. When Chacko learns about Ammu's love affair, the family locks her inside a room. The kids play games at an abandoned History House across the river. Once when they row toward the History House, Sophie Mol drowns inside the river, causing her to die. Kochamma reports to police that Velutha raped Ammu and killed Sophie Mol. Velutha is brutally killed that night. Eventually, Estha is sent to Baba and Rahel lives with Ammu. Four years later, Ammu dies. Rahel lives in America with her husband, and later she divorced him. Estha returns to Ayemenem, and so Rahel returns there. Estha and Rahel met one another at 31 years old. They shared their nostalgic recounting and committed incest with a great agony that none other than their own twin understood them. The significant themes include family, loyalty, forbidden love, colonialism/post-colonialism, education discrimination, and social class inequality.
