Angie's Freestyle Libre (Installing, uninstalling + discounts on FSL & Insulin)

Angie was found on Maui in 2020. She was only 5 pounds and and should have been about 12. She was nursed back to health and was diagnosed as Diabetic. However, as her insulin was increased each week, her BG #s did not drop. At this Tim she was tested for a rare disease called Acromagaly, and tested positive. Acromagaly is a small tumor in brain pushing on pituitary gland, resulting in too much cortisone / too much growth hormone. This makes the kitty present as diabetic, however, she is not. She still needs insulin but it also makes her resistant- meaning she is on very high doses, currently about 20u a day (most cats are on 1-4u a day). This helps a little but still doesnt bring her #s to a normal range. The 1st time I used the libre, about 1 week into it, right out of nowhere, her #s crashed from 400 to 40 (near death). Thankfully I saw this drastic dropping on the libre and started administering sugar to the gums. It took 90 mins of sugar on the gums until she was back up to 100. I am absolutely sure this libre saved her life. I was only testing at shot time before the libre, not the hours in between. Cats with Acro have 3 choices- 1. high doses of insulin w a lot of home BG testing 2. laser radiation which is a 15 main procedure every other day for 6 days (3 times)- #s will still be inconsistent for a year as tumor dies off. most cats off insulin after a year. tumor can grow back sometimes. 3. surgical removal of tumor through roof of mouth. this requires a longer hospital stay and I belief still only one clinic is doing it, univ of Washington. most cats are off insulin immediately. tumor can grow back sometimes. Due to living on Maui/COVID, we are waiting until 2021 to do the laser radiation on the mainland. So fo now, the libre is quite literally, a lifesaver.
