Schulterschmerzen – Die lange Bizepssehne

Sports orthopedic surgeons Dr. Ulrich Boenisch and Dr. Florian Elser from the Hessingpark Clinic report on shoulder pain caused by problems with the long head of the biceps tendon. The biceps muscle is doubly suspended in the shoulder joint: there is a strong tendon outside the joint and then a thin tendon, the so-called long head of the biceps tendon. The long head of the biceps tendon is a remnant from evolution when humans were still quadrupeds; now it causes shoulder pain for many people, even though it generally serves no purpose. A common cause of this shoulder pain is irritation and inflammation, accompanied by an increased production of inflammatory fluid. This can lead to the development of bursitis in the shoulder, which causes pain. The typical pain of the long head of the biceps tendon is located at the front of the shoulder, while pain from bursitis tends to radiate laterally into the shoulder. For pain in the long head of the biceps tendon, there are both conservative and surgical treatment options, depending on the cause of the pain.
