Built in 1749 during the Lê Dynasty, this gate was originally known as Đông Hà Môn, guarding the eastern approach to the Thăng Long Citadel near the Red River. It was later renamed Ô Quan Chưởng to honour a fallen Nguyễn Dynasty commander and his soldiers who bravely defended the gate during the French invasion of 1873. Unlike the other city gates demolished during colonial expansion, Ô Quan Chưởng survived thanks to local resistance.
