Masango: A Munga Story

Masango: A Munga Story is a story of a young Zulu mountain bike rider from Quasemane in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. In December 2020 Sithembiso Masango took part in his 5th The Munga Race across the semi-desert heartland of South Africa. The Munga is a 1 000 kilometers semi-supported mountain bike race that takes place during summer. The terrain is rugged, dry and dusty and the weather can be extremely hot. It is a single-stage event with riders having to make do with only a few water points on the route. Founded by Alex Harris, the event aims to push riders to their limits over a few days. Sithembiso tells his story of hardships, starting out in cycling, his inspiration, and ultimately what cycling has taught him. He is a team member of Change a Life Academy who invests in and supports disadvantaged young people in rural communities to better their lives through sport. This is a story of overcoming all the obstacles of being a disadvantaged, black cyclist and applying the lessons learned through cycling in his own life.
